Foster film to be fully financed by Splendid/IEG; budget: USD 15 to 20 million
Splendid Medien AG, Cologne, and its subsidiary Initial Entertainment Group (IEG), Los Angeles, will fully finance the film "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" to be produced by Egg Pictures, which is owned by the Academy Award winner Jodie Foster. Jodie Foster will play a role herself in the film. The budget for the project has been set at USD 15 to 20 million, and shooting is expected to start in May 2000. Splendid/IEG own all world-wide rights including Internet rights.
Jodie Foster, who has already produced successful films such as "Nell" and "Home for the Holidays" with her company "Egg Pictures", is very satisfied with the arrangement with Splendid. "With Splendid/IEG, I am very pleased to have found partners who share my vision. I am very positive for this arrangement".
With its latest film project, Splendid has again demonstrated its intention to become a global content provider. Only last week, Splendid announced the joint film project "Traffic" with Fox Searchlight, in which Harrison Ford will play the leading part. Splendid/IEG will co- produce/co-finance further projects, namely "Dr. T. and the Women" directed by Robert Altman and starring Richard Gere and the Academy Award winner Helen Hunt, as well as "Gangs of New York", the largest independent project so far in the history of film, directed by Martin Scorsese and with Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio. The company will in future acquire further world rights for blockbusters with budgets of between USD 15 and 50 million as a result of the production arrangement with Catherine Zeta-Jones announced in January 2000.
Splendid has also been successful recently in acquiring further film licenses: Splendid has acquired the rights for the HBO film "If These Walls Could Talk II" with Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres for Germany and other key European countries. With "If These Walls Could Talk I", the prequel to this film, which was released under the title "Das Haus der stummen Schreie" on German Free-TV, the American Pay-TV station HBO achieved its highest ever audience ratings.
