Michael Douglas to star in "Traffic" / Catherine Zeta-Jones as supporting actress / Dennis Quaid will star in another important role
(Cologne/Los Angeles - April 4, 2000) - Michael Douglas is to play the leading role in the US cinema production of "Traffic". He is taking the place of Harrison Ford to portray a judge who is committed to combating drug traffic. "Traffic" is a joint filmmaking project involving Splendid Medien AG, Cologne, and its subsidiary, Initial Entertainment Group (IEG), Los Angeles, in cooperation with USA Films, the production arm of the American cable network provider, USA Networks, Inc. NASDAQ: USAI.
"In persuading Michael Douglas to star in the film, we have secured one of the most famous and popular Hollywood stars to play the leading role in our latest project", explained Andreas R. Klein, CEO of Splendid Medien AG. The budget for the Hollywood production is between 60 and 65 million dollars. "Traffic" is scheduled to go before cameras on April 9, 2000.
Douglas will be playing the role of Judge Robert Lewis in "Traffic", a legal man who is trying to put a stop to drug trafficking in the United States. His leading lady is Catherine Zeta-Jones in the role of the drug smuggler, Helena Montoya. Furthermore Dennis Quaid will star in another important role. The film is directed by Steven Soderbergh, who has been at the top of the US cinema charts for several weeks with his film, "Erin Brockovich", starring Julia Roberts. He is also renowned for blockbusters such as the thriller, "Out of Sight", with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez.
"Traffic" constitutes another step towards becoming global content provider for Splendid. Within only a few months of going public, Splendid/IEG has increased its portfolio of world rights through its participation in sensational produc- tions such as "Dr. T and the Women", directed by the auspicious Robert Altman and starring Richard Gere and Oscar-winning actress, Helen Hunt. Further noteworthy projects include "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" with Jodie Foster and "Gangs of New York", directed by the famous Martin Scorsese and with Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. The recently announced produc- tion joint venture with Milkwood Films, Catherine Zeta-Jones' production company, means further world rights to first-rate films budgeted at between 15 and 50 million dollars.
