On 13 and 14 December Crescendo-S, TSG 't Zal Wel Go, Diem25 Belgium, Ghent University and the City of Ghent will organise the symposium 'Work and Democracy': Ghent and Europe.

Op 13 en 14 december organiseren Crescendo-S, TSG 't Zal Wel Gaan, Diem25 België, Universiteit Gent en Stad Gent het symposium 'Arbeid en Democratie': Gent en Europa.

This extraordinary symposium promotes independent, long-term thinking about labour and democracy. It puts an international perspective next to a local one (Ghent). The speakers actively involve the participants to formulate policy alternatives that become a concrete input for local politics in Ghent.
Friday 13th December 2019 at 19:30h
Discussions between speakers (University of Ghent, Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 33, Ghent):
1. An economic perspective with Prof. Dr. Yanis Varoufakis (former Greek Minister of Finance, DiEM25 co-founder, Member of the Greek Parliament), Prof. Dr. Koen Schoors (UGent) and Prof. Dr. Petra De Sutter (UGent, EU Parliament). 2. A perspective of rights and identity with Prof. Dr. Olivier De Schutter (UCL, Columbia University, UN), Prof. Dr. Em. Rik Pinxten (UGent) and Prof. Dr. An Jacobs (VUB). 3. A progressive city perspective with Jordi Ayala Roquetta (CEO of the City of Barcelona), Daniel Termont (Gent, Eurocities) and Kathleen Van Brempt (EU Parliament).
The event will be moderated by Anna Luyten. International (EU) and local (cities) perspectives and a Green New Deal will be part of the discussions. The language is English.

Saturday 14th December 2019
Workshops with subsequent feedback from the speakers (see Friday evening). The participants receive technical input and can develop their policy proposals on various topics.
Each workshop has a morning and afternoon session with the possibility to select 2 different workshop sessions. Each workshop session has a maximum of 40 participants (4 tables). Experts will lead the session and give suggestions and help to formulate innovative (political) ideas. One session lasts 2.5 hours. The languages spoken are Dutch and English. Representatives of the Ghent Municipality will be present.
The workshops:
1. Defining new ways of democracy in work. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Humblet (UG Sozialrecht) and representatives of the social partners.
2. Defining new ways of democracy on market and society level. Under the direction of Prof. Deschacht (Labour Economics, KUL), Rudy De Leeuw (International Trade Union).
3. Developing inclusive and complementary methods for defining and evaluating work, including community and "social economy". Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Stijn Oosterlinck (Urban Sociology, Social Innovation, UA), Rudy Coddens (OCMW Gent), representative of social workshops.
4. Developing new, sustainable and inclusive business models and practices at the local level. Led by Daan Schalck (CEO of the Port of Gent-Vlissingen) and Koen Schoors (economy UGent).
5. How to turn IT, Internet, robotics and AI into a utopia and not a dystopia. Under the direction of Prof. Belpaeme (Robotics UGent) and Joren de Wachter (DiEM25 - Technological Sovereignty).
Prof Dr. Varoufakis will be available for interviews on Friday. Jordi Ayla Roquetta and Joren de Wachter (all DiEM25) are available on Friday and Saturday for interviews.

Op 13 en 14 december organiseren Crescendo-S, TSG 't Zal Wel Gaan, Diem25 België, Universiteit Gent en Stad Gent het symposium 'Arbeid en democratie': Gent en Europa.
Het symposium wil onafhankelijk, 'out-of-the-box', langetermijndenken over arbeid en democratie
bevorderen. We plaatsen een internationaal naast een lokaal (Gents)
perspectief, zetten de deelnemers aan tot het formuleren van alternatieven, met
als doel inzicht verwerven en input verzamelen voor het lokale Gentse beleid. Met die resultaten zal richting langetermijnoplossingen worden verder gewerkt.

Een economisch perspectief met Prof. Yanis Varoufakis (Griekse ex-minister financiën, Diem25 co-oprichter, Grieks parlement), Prof. Koen Schoors (UGent) en Prof. Petra De Sutter (UGent, EU parlement). 2. Een rechten en identeitsperspectief met Prof. Olivier De Schutter (UCL, Columbia University, UN), Prof. Em. Rik Pinxten (UGent) en Prof. An Jacobs (VUB). 3. Een vooruitstrevend stadsperspectief met Jordi Ayala Roquetta (Algemeen Directeurstad Barcelona), Daniel Termont (Gent, Eurocities) en Kathleen Van Brempt (EU parlement).
De moderator is Anna Luyten. Bij elk thema wordt zowel een internationaal (EU) als lokaal (steden) perspectief gehanteerd. Er zal ook aandacht zijn voor een Green New Deal. Debatten in het Engels.

Workshops met feedback van de gastsprekers (zie vrijdagavond). De participanten zullen technische input ontvangen en kunnen hun ideeën betreffende beleid uitwerken over verschillende onderwerpen.
Elke workshop heeft een ochtend- en namiddagsessie zodat je aan 2 verschillende kan deelnemen. Elke workshopsessie heeft maximum 40 deelnemers (4 tafels). Experten begeleiden de sessie en geven je input om vernieuwende (politieke) ideeën te formuleren. Een sessie duurt 2,5 uur. De voertalen zijn Nederlands en Engels. Vertegenwoordigers uit de stadsadministratie van Gent nemen ook deel.

commons and 'social economy', begeleid door Prof. Stijn Oosterlinck (urban sociologie, maatschappelijke innovatie, UA), Rudy Coddens (OCMW Gent), vertegenwoordigers van sociale werkplaatsen.
4. Developing new, sustainable and inclusive business models and practices at city level. Begeleid door Thomas Densijder en Koen Schoors.
