Pekutherm Positioned for Success in 2025
- Pekutherm Kunststoffe GmbH has embodied sustainability from the very beginning.
- As a partner of the Europe-wide Recycling Alliance founded by Röhm, Pekutherm makes an important contribution to the circular economy.
- Pekutherm is expanding its recycling capacity and strengthening its presence in European markets to meet growing demand.
- Through recycling partnerships such as the one with Exolon, Pekutherm works as a reliable recycling partner, providing collection containers and recycling plastic waste in a sustainable and efficient way.
Geisenheim near Frankfurt am Main, January 23 2025 – Pekutherm Kunststoffe GmbH, a specialist in the recycling of thermoplastic materials such as acrylic glass (polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC), based in Geisenheim near Frankfurt, celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025. The company looks back on a successful year and, as Europe’s leading PMMA recycling specialist, anticipates many more milestones ahead.
This success is largely due to Pekutherm's continuous, forward-thinking approach. “Sustainability has been firmly anchored in our DNA for 40 years. Long before sustainability became a public matter, we have been making a significant contribution to conserving natural resources by professionally recycling valuable raw materials,” explained Heiko Pfister, Pekutherm's CEO.
Uniting for Sustainable PMMA Recycling: Pekutherm Joins Forces with the Röhm Recycling Alliance
Pekutherm is one of four partners of the European Alliance for Sustainable PMMA Recycling, which was launched by Röhm in 2024. This was created as part of the sustainability strategy and was driven by the desire to advance the circular economy. In addition to Pekutherm and Röhm, NEXTCHEM, the parent company of MyRemono, and POLYVANTIS also contribute their combined expertise to the partnership. It enables significantly more PMMA recyclables to be recovered through both mechanical and chemical recycling and reintroduced to the market as MMA and PMMA in virgin material quality.
As a certified waste management facility, Pekutherm makes a significant contribution to the recycling of PMMA and PC in Europe. With a sorting capacity of 10,000 tons per year, the company can efficiently process considerable amounts of plastic scrap and convert it into high-quality recyclates, thus making an important contribution to promoting a sustainable circular economy in Europe. For every 100 tons of recycled material used, almost 500 tons of carbon dioxide can be saved,” explained Heiko Pfister.” The global production of acrylic glass plates is increasing year on year. We see it as our responsibility to the environment to ensure that the resulting sharp increase in waste is fed into a circular economy.”
Recycling Partnership with Exolon: Pekutherm Offers Collection Boxes for All Plastics Manufacturers
Through the cooperation with Exolon Group, a leading manufacturer of polycarbonate sheets, customers are connected with the right recycling partner for scrap and old material when they purchase new material. As part of the “Closing the Loop” project, Pekutherm provides collection containers, so-called Ecoboxes, free of charge, picks them up after they have been filled and pays for the collected waste. After processing at the Geisenheim plant, the recycled granulate is made available for reuse. Other manufacturers, trading companies and processors of PMMA, PC or PETG products also have the opportunity to join this sustainable recycling partner program.
Pekutherm Expands Recycling Capacities and Strengthens European Presence
To meet the growing global demand for acrylic glass, Pekutherm is committed to further expanding its expansion into European markets. Pekutherm's managing director Heiko Pfister estimates that PMMA scrap volume in Europe is around 30,000 tons annually. Unfortunately, much of this scrap is shipped to Asia, where the amount recycled is thought to be very little. “We are currently recycling around 5,000 tons for reuse at our plant in Geisenheim. We have the capacity to double this amount and want to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Pfister. He cites the Baltic States and Northern Europe, where the company has already taken its first steps in Denmark and Finland, as target markets for expansion, in addition to Italy, Spain and France.
A Company Rooted in Tradition, Shaping the Future
Pekutherm was founded in 1985 by Erwin Pfister, the father of managing partner Heiko Pfister. The company name is an abbreviation of “Thermoplastische Kunststoffe Erwin Pfister” (Erwin Pfister Thermoplastics), which has been slightly shortened and reversed.
Pekutherm uses a proprietary, manufacturer-independent system for processing thermoplastic materials such as acrylic glass (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC). This system ensures one hundred percent pure separation and enables the production of high-quality recyclate that has the same processing properties as new material. A central part of the process is the precise manual work of more than 25 experts who carefully sort plastic waste by hand. It is then processed into pellets in precision granulators, cleaned and delivered to customers. Pekutherm's material is both economically and ecologically sound: it is attractively priced and helps customers establish a sustainable circular economy.
About Pekutherm
Pekutherm is Germany's leading recycling company for acrylic glass (PMMA) and other thermoplastics and has developed a sustainable recycling cycle for these materials. Sorting and subsequent processing produces a high-quality raw material that is available for new PMMA or PC products. Pekutherm takes the first step towards a new life for the plastic product with its own Ecoboxes, which are placed at companies where PMMA waste or other semi-finished thermoplastic products are produced as waste or off-cuts. The product is processed into granules at the plant. The raw material obtained in this way can be used to make new components that are environmentally friendly and conserve resources.
