Salzburg's green design oasis combines old with new, creating a unique place where like-minded and creative people meet
The Hotel zum Hirschen in Elisabeth-Vorstadt, one of Salzburg's most up-and-coming districts, skillfully bridges the gap between tradition and vision. Centrally located between the historic old town and the urban station district, the Hotel zum Hirschen has translated its premises into the future. Originally an inn with roots dating back to the 15th century, Salzburg's oldest family-run hotel now shines in new splendor. Katharina Richter-Wallmann and her husband Nikolaus are the 11th generation to run the hotel with the mission: Modern. Holistic. Sustainable. And always beautiful.
Attached you will find the press kit with detailed information about the new design hotel as well as the factsheet, some impressions and high res images.

The Style
The charming design hotel features 106 rooms and a spacious garden - a hidden green oasis in the heart of Mozart's city. Interestingly, Constanze, Mozart's widow, once resided in the Hirschen. How do we know that? Because she didn't pay her bills and is listed in the inventory with debts... Depending on requirements, the rooms at the Hotel zum Hirschen range from classic rooms and studios, some with a loggia and garden view, to apartments and junior suites with a private sauna and freestanding bathtub. The two two-story garden suites, housed in the former stables, offer a private realm with a fully equipped kitchenette, private terrace, and garden access - perfect for families or guests who plan an extended stay.
The lovingly furnished rooms retain the charm of bygone times and present an interior concept that preserves the character of the house while reinterpreting it. A straightforward and purist design philosophy enchants with thoughtful details and a soothing color palette reminiscent of a walk in the woods, inspired by various shades of wood and green. Bronzed brass on lights, handles, and fittings provides modern accents and timeless elegance. Salzburg interior designer Pia Clodi (Studio Eliste) explains: "I have collected many beautiful natural materials for an interior design that appreciates nature, and I pay careful attention to their use and application. In this project, my usual red thread has literally become a green one."
The hotel interior features stylish design highlights from renowned labels such as Popus Editions, Ercol, and Olaio, complemented by lighting from Francois Bazin Studio and Nuura. The Austrian design studio Atelier Areti has created luminaires especially for the hotel, now part of their new collection. Art lovers can look forward to the selection by the young Salzburg gallery owner Sophia Vonier. She focuses on up-and-coming and established artists, laying the foundation for the hotel's art collection with carefully curated contemporary works. And for a touch of nostalgia, old engravings have been reframed and now adorn the Hirschen's corridors in new splendor.
Culinary Delights
In culinary terms, the Hotel zum Hirschen is a true paradise for gourmets and foodies. In the breakfast room, bright and warm colors combined with plenty of natural light and perfectly staged art create an inviting ambiance. Breakfast classics with Austrian flair are served and, weather permitting, can be enjoyed on the spacious terrace surrounded by lush gardens. A large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes is a matter of course. The heart of the hotel is the sociable Hirschen Bar, which impresses with its cozy seating, eclectic accents, and modern design concept. Coffee and cake, a small selection of hearty dishes and snacks, Austrian wines and beers, classic cocktails, or a glass of Crémant are served here between 3 and 11 pm - a new "place to be" for guests and locals to relax and unwind, meet new people, or start the evening together.
Martin Eder is responsible for the restaurant's food concept, focusing on sustainable and local products. He is currently one of the hottest restaurateurs in Salzburg and runs the deli in the adjoining new building: the furo. In his kitchen, Salzburg and Tel Aviv meet, with a focus on home-baked sourdough pasta and vegetarian Levantine dishes. The philosophy of sharing small and large dishes takes center stage here. As Martin Eder puts it: "Eating is the most intimate thing you can do together... Sharing food means trusting someone. You don't share with everyone. The gesture of sharing your food, of breaking bread, makes you happy. We want to bring this feeling into the restaurant."
The Garden
Unique for a city hotel is the large garden, currently under construction, which will blossom for the first time in spring. A hidden gem in the middle of Salzburg's lively station district, it's a place of retreat promoting encounters. The award-winning landscape architect Karin Standler created a concept combining aesthetic design and ecological sustainability to improve the microclimate and enable maximum relaxation. Here, guests can linger, unwind, and recharge their batteries - enjoying the first coffee in the morning with a view of lush greens, secluded with a favorite book on a comfortable bench, or admiring the colorful blooms with children. The garden offers deceleration and many different uses for living, working, playing, and being.
Wellness and Sports
For those who don't want to neglect their workout routine while traveling, there is a stylish and well-equipped gym with weights, a bike, and a rowing machine. A yoga room with plenty of natural light invites you to do sun salutations. For bike tourists and bike packers, there is a secure room for guest bikes - including sockets for e-bikes. In the Hirschen Spa with infrared cabins and saunas made from local wood, including an organic sauna for female guests, you can feel comfortable and let yourself go. Massages can be organized on request.
Business and Events
The Hotel zum Hirschen offers three event rooms for up to 45 people, flexibly equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including BOSE sound bars, Click-Share, and Samsung Frame. Perfect for business meetings or a pop-up yoga event, the rooms are ideal for various uses in Hirschen style. The garden can also be used for separate meetings or relaxation in between - in the heart of the city. Culinary delights are also provided here by Martin Eder.
Am Hirschengrün
The hotel plays a central role in the opening of the progressive "Am Hirschengrün" urban quarter. The historic old building was completely renovated and extended by two annexes and a contemporary new building with 42 condominiums in sustainable timber hybrid construction. With the renowned architectural firms LP Architektur ZT GmbH and Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten ZT GmbH, the owners are relying on local experts in timber construction who place particular emphasis on the environmentally friendly use of resources. The vision: to be a new old space for Salzburg residents and people from all over the world.
"It is particularly important for us to create something of sustainable value in this place. We feel both great joy and responsibility towards the people who live here, and in our surroundings, now and in the future." - Katharina & Nikolaus Richter-Wallmann.
