TUM among the top 25 worldwide in several subjects
QS Ranking: outstanding scores in engineering and natural sciences
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is ranked among the 25 best universities worldwide in the areas of engineering and the natural sciences. TUM also placed in the top 50 for 10 individual subjects according to the "QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019".
TUM placed 22nd in Engineering & Technology and 24th in Natural Sciences. This made it the best German university in both of these broad subject areas.
For this ranking, which is among the most influential in the world, the British recruitment company QS asks scientists and companies to rate the best universities. It also collects data on the frequency of citations of published research. The weightings of the various indicators take into account the diverse cultures across disciplines.
Along with the broad subject areas, QS also examines individual subjects. With improved results over the previous year in almost every area, TUM now counts among the 50 best universities in 10 subjects:
- Physics & Astronomy: 16th (1st in Germany) - Electrical Engineering: 20th (1st in Germany) - Architecture: 25th (1st in Germany) - Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering: 25th (2nd in Germany) - Agriculture & Forestry: 26th (3rd in Germany) - Chemistry: 27th (1st in Germany) - Computer Science & Information Systems: 34th (1st in Germany) - Materials Science: 39th (2nd in Germany) - Mathematics: 45th (1st in Germany) - Chemical Engineering: 50th (3rd in Germany)
The issue of the "QS World University Rankings" with overall ratings for universities was released in mid-2018. TUM ranked 61st, and was thus the best German university for the fourth consecutive year.
