- Release of the documentary in November 2024 on ARD and in the ARD Mediathek – picturing Boris Herrmann's second participation in the world’s toughest solo sailing race, the ‘Vendée Globe’.
Berlin, 15 August 2024. The toughest solo sailing race in the world starts in France every four years. 80 days around the world alone. A third of the boats that start don't make it to the finish.
In November 2024 it's that time again! Boris Herrmann will be taking part in the race of superlatives for the second time. The documentary ‘Boris Herrmann – Sailing at the Limit’, which celebrates its world premiere at Hamburg Film Festival on 30 September 2024, illustrates what this means for people and equipment. To coincide with the start of the Vendée Globe, the film will be broadcast on ARD in November 2024 and will be available online in the ARD Mediathek.
Boris Herrmann is considered one of the stars of the global sailing scene. In 2020/21, he sailed the world's toughest non-stop regatta for the first time. This superlative sailing race is Boris Herrmann's lifelong dream, but it pushes him to his physical and emotional limits. Whilst still on board, he vows never to sail this regatta again. But as soon as Herrmann is back on land, he begins to design a completely new ship – a Game of Vabanque. The right innovations can bring great advantages, but if he overdoes it, there is a risk of total failure. It would be the end of his career.
The documentary ‘Boris Herrmann – Sailing at the Limit’ paints an interesting picture from a sporting perspective, but at the same time it’s also a very intimate portrait of the German extreme sailor. Never before has Boris Herrmann allowed a film crew to accompany him for such a long time and get so close to his life, his motivation and his emotions. For the first time, his father and mother talk about the sailing star's childhood and family background. Jan Zabeil's film accompanies him through the highs and lows of the preparations for his next big challenge in key sporting and personal moments: the Vendée Globe 2024/25!
Christian Beetz comments: ‘Personally, I can hardly believe where you find the nerves for a race like this! The sailors look for storms and hurricane areas in the weather forecasts. And then they go right there and try to ‘jump’ on them to ride such a low. Well, and if you get too close, you crash the boat. I've been enthusiastic about Boris Herrmann for many years, and it was an absolute must for us to produce this film now, which not only shows him as an athlete, but also personally as a fascinating person.’
