ETERNAL YOU wins the Cinema for Peace Dove 2025 in the category Global Health, Technology, and Human Enhancement
Berlin, February 17, 2025
beetz brothers film production is proud to announce that ETERNAL YOU has been honored with the prestigious Cinema for Peace Dove 2025 in the category Global Health, Technology, and Human Enhancement.
ETERNAL YOU by Hans Block & Moritz Riesewieck celebrated its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 and has already received numerous awards, including the Scienceville Award for Best Documentary and the Best Director Award at the Global Science Film Festival. Most recently, the film won the Bavarian Film Award for Best Documentary.
Block & Riesewieck, along with beetz brothers film production, were previously nominated for a Cinema for Peace Dove for THE CLEANERS (2018). For beetz brothers film production the nomination for ETERNAL YOU marks its sixth nomination for the Cinema for Peace Dove. In 2011, their production BLOOD IN THE MOBILE won the award in the Justice category. Subsequent nominations included 1989 – A STATESMAN OPENS UP, THE FORUM, and IN THE SHADOW OF BEIRUT.
The renewed presentation of the Cinema for Peace Dove is a great honor that underscores our ongoing commitment to telling powerful and relevant stories.
Christian Beetz, Producer: “The Cinema for Peace Award stands for films that promote open exchange and the business model of democracy. It is a great pleasure and honor for us to receive this award in these difficult times. Our documentary ETERNAL YOU stands for a critical examination of artificial intelligence technology.”
Hans Block, Director : “We feel very honored and are deeply grateful for the award. In times when democracies are being undermined by populist promises, when Big Tech is pandering to a demagogue and throwing the values of an open society overboard, and when billions of people are being exposed to fake news and populist propaganda with the help of AI, the Cinema for Peace award is all the more important. It is a moment in which we stand together for peace, for humanity and for social justice.”
The award ceremony took place on Monday evening, where the directors and the producers Christian Beetz & Georg Tschurtschenthaler personally accepted the award.
Since its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, ETERNAL YOU has been shown at over 35 festivals worldwide, including CPH:DOX, Hot Docs, SFFF, DocsBarcelona and DOC NYC. The film continues to screen at festivals around the world and had a successful theatrical release in Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom and Switzerland last year. It was digitally released in the US by Film Movement in January.
ABOUT ETERNAL YOU
ETERNAL YOU accompanies people from around the globe who use artificial intelligence (AI) to “connect with the dead”. Joshua chats day and night with the digital clone of his deceased first love and lets her take part in his everyday life. Christi just wants confirmation that her late best friend is doing well in heaven, but has a harrowing experience with his AI likeness. Jang Ji-Sung meets the VR clone of her deceased 7-yr-old daughter. The inventors of the services deny any responsibility for the profound psychological consequences of those experiences. Numerous competitors hope for a lucrative market, as religious and collective forms of mourning are losing relevance. Is this the beginning of the end of finitude?
ETERNAL YOU is a beetz brothers film production in coproduction with WDR, NDR, BR, SWR, rbb, SRF I SRG SSR, VPRO and Docmine, in collaboration with ARTE, ORF, NRK, Impact Partners (USA), Motto Pictures (USA) and Concordia Studio (USA), with the support of Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and Creative Europe. World Sales: Dogwoof.
