Graz/Vienna, April 29, 2009. ANDRITZ HYDRO received an order from Rheinkraftwerk Iffezheim GmbH, 50/50 owned by German EnBW and French EDF, for supply of the electromechanical equipment for the new unit 5 of the Iffezheim power station. The order value is approximately 25 MEUR; start-up of the new unit is scheduled for autumn 2011.
The core of the new unit is a bulb-type turbine generator set with 6.8 m runner diameter and a maximum power output of 38.5 MW. This investment will increase the total power output of the hydropower plant to almost 150 MW making Iffezheim the largest hydropower plant on the Rhine. As a result, the average annual electricity production will increase from 740 million kWh to approximately 860 million kWh and, thus, it will be possible to supply an additional 85,000 people with electricity from environmentally friendly hydropower.
The turbine will be designed as a bulb unit, which is a proven design for low head power plants. The generator is directly coupled to the horizontal turbine shaft and the generator housing is entirely submerged in the river flow.
