ANDRITZ HYDRO, part of international technology Group ANDRITZ, has received an order from VERBUND, the leading Austrian electrical energy supplier and one of the biggest hydropower generation companies in Europe, to modernize the Ybbs-Persenbeug run-of-river power plant (total capacity: 236 megawatts), which went into operation in 1959. Recently, one of the first major project milestones, the model test of the turbines, was finished successfully. Due to new technologies in hydraulic and electrical engineering, improved materials and manufacturing techniques, and digital control systems, the hydropower plant will generate additional power for 17,000 households until 2020. Currently the Danube river hydropower plant delivers power for 380,000 households. The modernization will improve the plant's efficiency and availability, and its annual output will increase by around 60 million kilowatt-hours, representing the equivalent to an annual saving of 49,000 tons of CO2 emissions. With its "Ybbs 2020" project, VERBUND is continuing its collaboration with ANDRITZ HYDRO to revitalize the power stations on the River Danube. Aschach power station on the Danube was already modernized between 2006 and 2010. - End - The ANDRITZ GROUP The ANDRITZ GROUP is a globally leading supplier of plants, equipment, and services for hydropower stations, the pulp and paper industry, the metalworking and steel industries, and solid/liquid separation in the municipal and industrial sectors.
