Dettingen/Erms (euro adhoc) - Germany, September 14, 2009 +++ Under the heading "Going for Green", ElringKlinger's activities at the IAA 2009 motor show will be centered around new technical solutions aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions. The focus at Stand B 07 (Hall4.0) will be on the three central issues facing today's automobile industry - lower fuel consumption, reduced emission levels and new drive technologies. With newly developed products such as an SCR injection module for automobiles and a diesel particulate filter coating aimed at soot reduction, the company will be showcasing among other products its latest range of solutions for exhaust after-treatment, presented in a specially designed glass exhaust tract.

Downsizing: small is the new big With a view to scaling back fuel consumption and meeting future carbon dioxide targets, the majority of vehicle manufactures have been turning their attention to charged engines with lower displacement. This so-called "downsizing", in combination with the use of more lightweight materials, increased injection and combustion pressures as well as higher temperatures, is seen as a promising way of cutting CO2 emissions. Armed with a portfolio of state-of-the-art products in the area of sealing and shielding technology, ElringKlinger is providing manufacturers with valuable support when it comes to meeting the above-mentioned goals.

Elrotherm® shielding systems for engine, transmission and exhaust tract Modern temperature management is becoming increasingly complex. As a result of the higher packing density of automotive components, together with the trend towards engine encapsulation, the reduced flow of cooling air as well as the deployment of catalytic converter technology and turbochargers, the engine compartment, vehicle underbody and exhaust system are being exposed to ever increasing temperatures. At the same time, vehicles are being fitted with a growing number of highly temperature-sensitive components that have to be protected against heat. Deploying a range of technologies, ElringKlinger is tackling this "hot topic" with the help of tailor- made shielding systems that are designed to protect against both heat and noise. As one of the few manufacturers worldwide, ElringKlinger offers all-embracing shielding solutions for the engine compartment, underbody and exhaust tract. In parallel, various acoustic shielding systems reduce noise levels and thus help to create an improved driving experience.

Emission reduction: stricter emission standards place higher demands on sealing technology Modern vehicle exhaust systems comprise a growing number of components aimed at scaling back emission levels. Oxidation catalytic converters, NOx adsorbers, particulate filters and AdBlue® injection systems all have to be incorporated and sealed under challenging temperature conditions. ElringKlinger has defined this area as a focal point of its R&D activities. Committed to emission reduction, the company will be presenting a range of specialty gasket solutions at this year's IAA motor show.

New generation of metal-layer cylinder-head gaskets with stopper technologies for elevated injection pressures The latest generation of ElringKlinger-produced cylinder-head gaskets is designed to deliver optimized sealing of engine components even at very high injection pressures and under extreme thermal conditions. The use of specially designed meander, honeycomb and segment stoppers has led to more even pressure distribution, as well as reducing the level of stress exerted on individual engine components. The company will be presenting its technology of partial elastomer coating, which offers optimized stability and is thus capable of meeting the advanced performance specifications of high-tech internal combustion engines. In parallel, sealing technology is having to address the specific challenges associated with synthetically and biologically produced fuels such as bio-ethanol. In response to the introduction of these alternative fuels, which are becoming increasingly important in the North and South American markets, ElringKlinger has launched a range of specifically modified gasket products.

Weight reduction: lower CO2 levels with lightweight plastic housing modules Vehicle weight reduction plays an integral part in scaling back carbon dioxide emissions. Lower weight translates directly into lower fuel consumption. Developed for use in passenger and commercial vehicles, the lightweight plastic modules produced by ElringKlinger incorporate a number of add-on functions and are designed to replace heavy metal components. Among the solutions presented at this year's IAA are new cam cover modules with an integrated oil trap system, multifunctional oil pan concepts as well as gearbox covers with integral gasket technology and decoupling system.

ElringKlinger presents nano coating development project for diesel particulate filters Under the Euro 5 statutory emission standards that came into force in September 2009, diesel-powered automobiles will have to meet even stricter requirements when it comes to reducing the emission of soot particulates. In the vast majority of cases, the more than seven million diesel vehicles newly registered in Europe each year are equipped with particulate filter technology. A large proportion of the costs associated with such technology is currently attributable to the catalytic precious-metal coating of the filter body, which plays an important part in filter regeneration.

At this year's IAA motor show, ElringKlinger will be presenting a newly developed coating material for ceramic diesel particulate filters. The new coating is designed to significantly improve the process of soot burn-off in the filter body. The coating material delivered good results during laboratory testing, and the company has now commenced endurance testing and the phase of system trials. The coating material is applied during production using a special coating process. The reactive layer is produced on the basis of environmentally friendly silicate technology, without the use of heavy or precious metals, and is suitable for ceramic substrates such as silicon carbide, aluminum titanate and cordierite. Modified specifically for automotive applications, the coating material, for which ElringKlinger holds an exclusive license, is to be marketed as a cost-effective, alternative to conventional precious-metal filter coatings.

Interesting growth prospects for technology-driven suppliers in Asia Dr. Stefan Wolf, CEO of Elringklinger AG, sees interesting growth opportunities in the coming years for automotive suppliers who have positioned themselves strongly within the areas of exhaust technology, engine downsizing and alternative drive systems and are capable of supporting manufacturers by contributing innovations that embrace fuel efficiency and are environmentally friendly. Furthermore, Dr. Wolf believes that automotive suppliers are likely to make an ever growing contribution to technological development and the entire value creation process. "In future, the bar will be set considerably higher when it comes to the reduction of emissions and lower fuel consumption, and this applies in particular to growth markets such as China, India and the ASEAN member states. Benefiting from its significant investments in Asia during the last two years and a new- generation product range centered on CO2 reduction, ElringKlinger has what it takes to expand its market position substantially in the Asian region," says Dr. Wolf.
