WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management has brought to life its new Center of Excellence for Entrepreneurial Families (“CoE”), a collaborative effort financially supported by LGT Private Banking. The center’s goals are to advance research on topics relevant to family businesses and, in furthering an open and science-based dialogue, to improve the public’s awareness of these crucial market players. This includes instilling a broader understanding of their value, the roles they play, as well as the challenges they face.

“It’s for good reason that family businesses are often called the ‘backbone’ of our economy,” said Professor Christian Andres, Dean of WHU. “And yet, the challenges—and achievements—of these unique companies are largely unknown to the general public. Our new center will make use of its scientific findings to change that, and I am delighted that we have the renowned LGT at our side as we pursue this goal.”

“As a family-run private bank ourselves, we know how important it is to have a strong understanding of a family business’s unique opportunities and challenges,” noted Dr. Florian Dürselen, member of the Executive Board at LGT Bank. “We’re excited to be working alongside WHU to advance the scientific insights and to strengthen the discourse surrounding family businesses.”

Two assistant professors will conduct research at the new Center of Excellence for Entrepreneurial Families, guided by Professor Nadine Kammerlander (Chair of Family Business) and Professor Nic Schaub (Chair of Household Finance). The partnership between LGT and WHU is planned to last a minimum of six years.

“I’m excited to be working together with Professor Nic Schaub and our two assistant professors to tackle the family business’s most pressing questions. This is a large undertaking to which I am fully dedicated,” said Professor Nadine Kammerlander.
