Barely one year after the signing of the joint venture agreement between the Nordex Group and its Chinese partners (Ningxia Electric Power Group and Ningxia Tianjing Electric Energy Development Group), the first multi-megawatt turbines are leaving the new joint assembly facility in Yinchuan. "This is a major step forward for us. Local production facilities are crucial for success in China in the future. And what were talking about is one of the worlds largest growth market," says Thomas Richterich, commenting on the delivery of the first 1.5 MW turbine. The Chinese government wants to increase the installed wind farm capacity from a current volume of around 1,500 MW to 30,000 MW by 2020.
The first turbines will be sent straight to a major project being executed by the partner companies involving a wind farm located in the province of Ningxia with a total capacity of 200 megawatts. In the long term, annual output at this facility is to be increased to 300 MW per year, equivalent to 200 Nordex S70/77 (1,500 MW) turbines, which are being assembled here. Nordex will also be building the rotor blades for these turbines in China as of January 2007, when the companys new rotor blade production facility commences op-erations in Dongying. Once fully up and running, this plant will supply up to 300 turbines with rotor blades each year.
