The Audi A2, the first volume-built car with an all-aluminium body, has received the 2000 European Aluminium Award. Wulf Leitermann, representative of the Audi Aluminium Centre in Neckarsulm, was presented with the award during the "Aluminium in Automotive" congress at the AutoDome car museum in the Dutch city of Rosmalen. Following the A8 in 1994, the A2 is now the second Audi model with ASF Audi Space Frame to receive this award.
The award is an initiative by the Dutch Aluminium Centre with the support of the European Aluminium Association (EAA). The jury, made up of international experts on aluminium, praised Audi: "Thanks to the application of state-of-the-art production techniques such as laser welding, Audi has succeeded in a very short space of time in developing a car, from concept to production vehicle, which, thanks to its very low kerb weight, is able to combine good performance with very economical fuel consumption."
After the A8, the Audi A2 is Audi's second car with an all-aluminium body. In contrast to the A8, which has a daily production volume of around 80 vehicles, about 300 A2 cars are manufactured daily, with a high degree of automation.
