Yanis Varoufakis to meet President López Obrador today on official visit to Mexico

Mexico City, Tuesday January 31st
Invited by the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel López Obrador, with whom he will meet today, Tuesday January 31, at 10.30 (local time), at the Presidential Palace, DiEM25’s Yanis Varoufakis will have additional bilateral working meetings with Finance Minister Rogelio Ramirez and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
The agenda of these meetings includes issues such as:
- The Progressive International's and DiEM25’s campaign for an effective New Non-Aligned Movement, in the face of the new US-China Cold War, the war in Ukraine, and the new wave of debt and poverty threatening the countries of the Global South
- The impact of the new US protectionism (in the form of the Inflation Reduction Act), and the division of the world into two currency blocs, on countries such as Greece and Mexico
- The joint campaign for the release of Julian Assange
- The bilateral relations of friendship and solidarity between the peoples of Greece and Mexico.
Yesterday, Monday January 30, Varoufakis — who also leads the MeRA25 party in Greece — met with the President of the ruling Moreno party, Mario Martin Delgado, as well as with MPs of the Moreno party, with the aim of developing cooperation between the two parties, Moreno and MeRA25.
In the margins of the meetings with members of the Mexican government, Yanis Varoufakis also met with Rafael Correa, former President of Ecuador, with whom they share a long-standing friendship.
