NEWS RELEASE
A new record semester begins
Renewed increase in internationalization at TUM: 30 percent of students from abroad
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is launching the winter semester of its 150th year with more record-breaking statistics: Approximately 13,800 young talents have matriculated as new students in Munich, Garching, Freising, Straubing, Heilbronn and Singapore, with more than one third coming to the German locations from abroad. This means the share of international students at TUM has grown from 20 to 30 percent within only five years.
This year TUM is welcoming approximately 7,300 first-semester students in the basic curricula (primarily Bachelor's programs), another new record. Around 4,700 students are beginning Master's degree programs, a figure comparable to the previous year values. TUM has thus reached a new high with an enrollment of 41,500 students.
As in the previous year, almost half of the students in Master's degree programs are from countries other than Germany. 45 of these programs are presented in English. The share of foreign students among first-semester students in the mainly German-language Bachelor's degree programs has risen to almost one fourth.
The fact that TUM prepares its students ideally for the professional world is attested to for example by the "Global University Employability Ranking", which surveys 6,000 companies in 20 countries as to the quality of university graduates. The study ranks TUM in eight place worldwide.
TUM Campus Heilbronn opens
The sixth TUM site is celebrating its premiere: Although the contract covering the long-term financing of the new TUM Campus Heilbronn by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation was not signed until spring, the "pioneer class" of around 40 students is already beginning its management studies in Heilbronn.
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of Europe's leading research universities, with around 550 professors, 42,000 students, and 10,000 academic and non-academic staff. Its focus areas are the engineering sciences, natural sciences, life sciences and medicine, combined with economic and social sciences. TUM acts as an entrepreneurial university that promotes talents and creates value for society. In that it profits from having strong partners in science and industry. It is represented worldwide with the TUM Asia campus in Singapore as well as offices in Beijing, Brussels, Cairo, Mumbai, San Francisco, and São Paulo. Nobel Prize winners and inventors such as Rudolf Diesel, Carl von Linde, and Rudolf Mößbauer have done research at TUM. In 2006 and 2012 it won recognition as a German "Excellence University." In international rankings, TUM regularly places among the best universities in Germany.
