Working at Audi has become even safer: in the year 2000 the number of industrial accidents at the Audi plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm dropped once again compared with the previous year: with 6.3 industrial accidents per million hours worked, Audi was able to reduce the previous year's level (1999: 6.8) by 7.4 percent. In doing so Audi outperformed the average for this sector, which fell to 12.0 accidents per million hours worked (1999: 13.3), by 48 percent.
"Last year we once again recorded the lowest figure ever in company history. Our goal is to sustain this success and build on it in future", remarked Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Production, at today's presentation of the 2000 Audi Occupational Safety Award in Ingolstadt. Heizmann emphasised that occupational safety represents an integral part of the company's economic success. "Safety at the workplace is one of the prerequisites for high quality production and products", stressed Heizmann.
The 2000 Occupational Safety Award was presented to "Body Development, Ingolstadt". This department succeeded in reducing its accident figures from 6.4 in the previous year to 0.
The trophy for accident-free work over a period of more than 2.1 million hours worked, which was awarded for the second time, went to "Vocational Training, Neckarsulm" again. For the first time a trophy was also awarded for continually reducing accident figures over the past five years. This was won by "Power Unit Components, Ingolstadt". Between 1996 and 2000 this department succeeded in reducing accident frequency from 10.8 to 5.3 industrial accidents per million hours worked.
The awards were presented by the AUDI AG Board Members Dr. Jochem Heizmann (Production) and Dr. h.c. Andreas Schleef (Human Resources), Xaver Meier, Chairman of the Audi General Works Council, and Norbert Rank, Chairman of the Works Council at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm.
Xaver Meier emphasised the significance attached to occupational safety by the General Works Council: "Employees' health and safety is one of our most important tasks. Last year's outstanding result serves to confirm the effective and close cooperation between works council and company management." Meier went on to stress that the General Works Council would play its part in ensuring that high safety standards are sustained and further improved in future.
