European Go Congress 2023 Comes to Leipzig
The 65th European Go Congress (EGC) is the largest event in the European go calendar. Go enthusiasts from across Europe and around the world will convene to celebrate the ancient game of strategy. The two-week event is held annually by the European Go Federation for European go players of all strengths in a different country. In 2023, Markkleeberg in the south of Leipzig will be the venue. From 22 July to 5 August 2023, up to 1,000 participants from all over the world are expected at the Rudolf Hildebrand School directly on Lake Cospuden. It is one of 20 lakes surrounding the city of Leipzig that has undergone a transformation from a lignite mining site to a lively leisure oasis.
Go, a game known for its depth and complexity, has captured the minds of players for centuries. The European Go Congress serves as a pinnacle gathering, where participants can engage in intense competitions, exchange knowledge, and build connections within the vibrant Go community. The highlight of the congress will be the European Championship, in which the 32 best European go players will take part. In addition, there will be many other tournaments such as the Open European Championship, the weekend tournament, blitz and pairs go. Team events, workshops and evening events will also be organized.
Intercultural Platform and Plenty of Variety for Young and Old
An important factor of the congress is the intercultural exchange. Professional go players from Europe and Asia come to the congress to give lessons and share their knowledge with amateur players. For many players, this event is an opportunity to play and talk with the strongest players in the world. From thrilling battles between seasoned professionals to friendly matches between amateur players, the congress offers an unparalleled platform to challenge oneself and learn from the best. There are numerous child-friendly events that also introduce young participants to the game.
In addition, many activities such as city trips, sports and evening events take place. Lake Cospuden with Zöbigker Harbour also offers restaurants and water activities of all kinds, passenger boat rides as well as bicycle and boat hire. Saxony's longest sandy beach welcomes visitors for a swim and a game of volleyball. Water tourers can paddle all the way from the City Harbour in the heart of Leipzig to Lake Cospuden.
