Werner Aisslinger’s famous Juli Chair turns 25. While the chair resides in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Glashütte watchmaker is now celebrating a Limited Edition from its Autobahn series.
GLASHÜTTE, OCTOBER 2021. At the Forum in Glashütte, a new industry meetup, the NOMOS Glashütte watchmaker acknowledged a masterpiece in a very different category—a chair. “Why do we do that when we’re watchmakers?” asks NOMOS managing director, Judith Borowksi. “Werner Aisslinger’s Juli Chair is part of the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in New York City,” she explains in answer. “This makes it part of design history. A classic piece like many of our watches.” The watchmakers celebrated—and gifted—this famed chair to celebrate the unveiling of the new Limited Edition NOMOS Autobahn automatic watch, another outstanding design by Werner Aisslinger.
“When I first built the prototype for the chair in my cellar at home, my son Juli, who was one-and-a-half at the time, was always underfoot. That’s where the chair got its name,” the designer and owner of studios in Berlin and Singapore explains. The renowned Milan furniture maker, Cappellini, acquired the design and makes the chair to this day. Now the Museum of Modern Art includes it in its collection. “It’s an accolade on par with the Academy Award for people in the film industry. This is the first German chair to manage that in decades,” Aisslinger tells us.
Now there’s a new watch, or rather, three. The Autobahn Limited Edition called “Director's Cut” features three sportive colors, all favorites of the designer. Nobody knows if they will make it into the MoMA—but the ones available at the Forum in Glashütte sold out as quickly as the chairs were signed.
