WEB.DE AG, operator of the German WEB.DE internet portal and European Leader for portal technologies, has concluded its very first international licensing deal for one of its proprietary technologies.
WEB.DE AG has sold a first license of its trust-center and digital signature technology for USD 2 million to an US based company. The WEB.DE technology allows issuing and management of digital signatures, that form the basis for secure communication and electronic transactions. Starting October 1st 2000, the digital signature will have the same legal status as the written one in the USA. With the license, the American company acquired the right to use this WEB.DE technology for North, Middle and South America, but limited to the Internet telephony sector. WEB.DE AG intends to license more of its unique technologies world-wide in the future.
With this agreement, WEB.DE AG has started its technology commercialisation strategy. While the WEB.DE portal is mainly focused on the German market, the company itself has plans for a world-wide expansion and regards the agreement as an important step in this direction
As opposed to most European Internet companies, WEB.DE AG develops almost all of its portal software and services in-house with a globally unmatched speed and won many awards, tests, and reviews in the past few months with this inherent competitive advantage. Among others, WEB.DE surpassed T-Online.de, Yahoo.de and Lycos.de in pageviews and stickiness in April,(Source: MMXI Europe, Digital Media Audience Ratings, April 2000).
This agreement emphasises the commitment of the WEB.DE team to regularly generate new revenue streams with high profit potential on top of existing revenue streams.
