secunet provides high security for Voice over IP - Confidential Internet telephony via SINA

Essen/Germany (ots)

secunet Security Networks AG
presents the SINA Secure Inter-Network Architecture in a Voice over
IP application at the CeBIT. This application allows top secret calls
to be processed on a highly confidential level. Furthermore, the SINA
Virtual Workstation demonstrates the high-security mobile use of
communication systems. secunet, the leading European provider of
high-security IT solutions and services presents its latest
applications to customers and journalists at the CeBIT in Hall 7,
Stall D38.
SINA voice over IP secures confidentiality Voice over IP (VoIP)
faces similar threats as the transfer of written messages or data
transfer. Confidentiality is particularly jeopardised wherever open
networks such as the Internet are included in the communication path.
Hence, secunet has transferred its expertise in the cryptographic
securing of IP communications to the VoIP field.
The Secure Inter-Network Architecture SINA, a high-grade
cryptographically secured virtual private network, allows users to
make IP calls on the highest confidentiality level. This level of
security is achieved in various communication applications: between
two IP telephones (via inserted SINA boxes), between IP telephones
and SINA Virtual Workstations (VW) and between two SINA VWs. At the
CeBIT, secunet staff will be demonstrating high-security VoIP
telephony using the SINA VW. SINA has been developed by secunet in
cooperation with the German Federal Office for Information Security
(Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, BSI).
SINA Virtual Workstation - high-level mobile and local security
To an increasing degree staff employed by public authorities or
companies work independently of their headquarters and dial into
their internal networks from various locations. The SINA Virtual
Workstation (VW) version 2.0, which was introduced in autumn 2005 and
is now commercially available (starting with the opening of the CeBIT
2006), was developed in order to secure these mobile workplaces.
secunet's SINA VW is a solution that serves both the needs of public
authorities and the specific requirements of industry. Companies can
now work at a security level that was previously reserved for public
authorities and international organisations.
SINA VW is based on state-of-the-art virtualisation technology that
encapsulates potentially insecure operating systems in the trusted
environment of the SINA-Linux operating system. This allows several
work sessions with different security levels to take place at the
same time. In addition, locally stored data can be encrypted
according to the applicable security specifications and stored in a
high-security cryptographic file system. The SINA VW forms the
centrepiece of secunet's CeBIT exhibition.
SINA prototype for PDA
secunet-studies outline the future of the SINA high-security
solution: inter alia, the company is presenting a prototype that
transfers all SINA functions to a PDA. This facilitates secure and
trusted use of increasingly small mobile appliances. Managers, who
frequently have to take decisions based on confidential information
while they are travelling, will benefit particularly from this
scenario. In line with the trend towards miniaturisation, secunet
currently develops a SINA application that can be used as an embedded
system.

About SINA
As the only Internet-Protocol(IP)-based solution to date, the SINA
Secure Inter-Network Application was approved by the German Federal
Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der
Informationstechnik, BSI) to transmit confidential information up to
the highest secrecy classification - STRENG GEHEIM (top secret). In
addition, SINA was approved to transmit NATO information up to SECRET
level in Germany.
Numerous national and international customers use SINA components.
For example, SINA secures all communication in the Information
Network of the German Federal Administration (Informationsverbund der
Bundesverwaltung, IVBV), and the German Federal Foreign Office has
chosen SINA to link up all German embassies and representations
worldwide.
