DHL plant "perfekten Flug" von Leipzig nach New York City

Leipzig/New York City, 30. Juni 2020: DHL Express, der weltweit führende Anbieter von Express Logistik, führt in der Nacht von Dienstag auf Mittwoch einen besonderen Testflug durch. Das Ziel: Auf seinem Flug vom DHL Hub in Leipzig zum JFK International Airport in New York City soll der A330-200F besonders ressourcenschonend fliegen und somit vor allem weniger Kerosin verbrauchen sowie CO2-Emissionen reduzieren. Möglich machen dies unter anderem die aktuell vergleichsweise leeren Flugräume aufgrund des reduzierten Luftverkehrs durch die Auswirkungen von Covid-19. Die durchführende DHL Fluggesellschaft European Air Transport GmbH hat auf dem Weg zum "perfekten Flug" über 50 Möglichkeiten identifiziert, um Treibstoff einzusparen und somit auch den Ausstoß von CO2-Emissionen zu reduzieren. Diese reichen von einer speziellen Wäsche der Triebwerke zur Verbesserung der Aerodynamik über eine optimierte Route mit Hilfe von modernen Flugwegplanungssystem und der optimalen Abflugroute (durchgängiger Steigflug zur Reiseflughöhe ab Leipzig/Halle, weitestgehend Horizontalflugphasen), bis hin zum idealen Anflugverfahren in New York City, bei dem die Maschine mit minimaler Triebwerksleistung sinken kann.

Optimale Routen und weniger Kerosinverbrauch können und werden uns dabei helfen, immer grüner zu werden".
Der "perfekte Flug" wird unter realen Bedingungen mit einer wie im Tagesgeschäft üblich beladenen Frachtmaschine (ca. 60 Tonnen Fracht) durchgeführt. Der Start am DHL Hub in Leipzig/Halle ist für Mittwochmorgen, 1 Juli, für voraussichtlich 3:15 Uhr vorgesehen. Die geplante Landung in New York City soll am gleichen Tag um 12:05 Uhr (mitteleuropäische Sommerzeit) erfolgen. Im Mittelpunkt der Maßnahme steht dabei eine optimale Flugroute, die DHL Express mit Unterstützung aller Flugsicherungsbehörden und unterstützenden Stellen entlang der Atlantikverbindung des A330 ausarbeiten konnte, die diesen Flug auch eng begleiten werden. Dazu zählen neben der deutschen Flugsicherung auch Eurocontrol, NATS (National Air Traffic Services, U.K.), IAA (Irish Aviation Authority), Shanwick Oceanic Control, NavCanada, ISAVIA (Iceland), IATA (International Air Transport Association), die FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) sowie PANYNJ (Port Authority of New York and New Jersey). Die insgesamt 13 beteiligten Institutionen werden auf dem Flug den stets optimalen Kurs und Flughöhe zuteilen sowie Wetter, Winde und den übrigen Flugverkehr überwachen. Die Experten schätzen die Einsparung von Kerosin auf mindestens 1.000 kg, dies würde einer Reduzierung des CO2-Ausstoßes von 3.150 kg entsprechen.

Unser 'perfekter Flug' kann dazu beitragen, dass Flugverbindungen immer ressourcenschonender und mit möglichst wenig Treibstoff und CO2-Emissionen durchgeführt werden können. So können wir wichtige Erkenntnisse für die Luftverkehrswirtschaft gewinnen und Schritt für Schritt zum Klimaziel 'Zero Emissions' der DPDHL Gruppe beitragen."
Die Maßnahme ist eine von vielen, die die DPDHL Group auf ihrem Weg in eine möglichst umweltfreundliche Logistik und Aviation umsetzt. Mit Maßnahmen wie der aktuellen Flottenerneuerung (u.a. A330-200F) und dem Erwerb von 14 neuen Boeing 777F Maschinen, die bis zu 18 Prozent weniger CO2-Emissionen ausstoßen, sowie dem Bau eines umweltfreundlichen Logistikzentrums am Flughafen Köln/Bonn 2019 hat das Unternehmen in den vergangenen Jahren viel in die Modernisierung der Luftfracht investiert. Darüber hinaus setzt DPDHL an verschiedenen Stellen auch grüne Alternativen zu konventionellen Kraftstoffen ein. Im Rahmen der Mitgliedschaften bei aireg e.V. sowie der Global Alliance Powerfuels treibt das Unternehmen die Entwicklung nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe wie Bio- oder E-Kerosin voran. Im Lieferverkehr macht der Einsatz von Elektrofahrzeugen bereits einen bedeutenden Anteil der Flotte aus.

Leipzig/New York City, 30 June 2020: DHL Express, the world's leading express service provider, is conducting a ground-breaking demonstration flight early in the morning of July 1. On its flight from the DHL hub in Leipzig to JFK International Airport in New York City, the A330-200F is scheduled to consume a considerably lower amount of fuel and generate reduced CO2 emissions. This has been made possible by the less busy airspace as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. DHL's operating airline European Air Transport GmbH has identified more than 50 actions to support a "perfect flight" that will save jet fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. These range from a pre-flight engine washing to improve aerodynamics, to route optimisation using a state-of-the-art flight planning system and an optimal take off route (unrestricted climb to cruising altitude from Leipzig/Halle Airport), right through to a best possible descent procedure at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport where the aircraft descends in a constant angle with minimum thrust.

The "perfect flight" will be carried out under real operating conditions with the cargo plane loaded to its usual capacity (approx. 60 tons of freight). The flight is scheduled to take off from the DHL hub at Leipzig/Halle on Wednesday July 1 at around 3:15 a.m. (Central European Summer Time). The arrival in New York City is scheduled for 12:05 pm (CEST) on the same day. DHL Express developed an optimal flight scenario in cooperation with all air traffic control units and other aviation partners along the Atlantic route, including German Air Traffic Control (DFS), Eurocontrol, NATS (National Air Traffic Services, U.K.), IAA (Irish Aviation Authority), Shanwick Oceanic Control, NavCanada, ISAVIA (Iceland), IATA (International Air Transport Association), the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and PANYNJ (Port Authority of New York and New Jersey). A total of 13 participating institutions have committed to support an optimal flight route and altitude taking into account actual weather conditions, wind, and other air traffic during the flight. The jet fuel saving of the flight is anticipated to be 1,000 kg, which corresponds to a reduction in CO2 of 3,150 kg.

This is just one of many initiatives that the Deutsche Post DHL Group is implementing on its way to making logistics and aviation as environmentally friendly as possible. With measures such as the current A330-200F fleet renewal and the acquisition of 14 new Boeing 777F aircraft which generate up to 18 percent less CO2 emissions, as well as the construction of an environmentally friendly logistics center at Cologne/Bonn Airport in 2019, the company has invested heavily in the modernization of its airfreight operations in recent years. In addition, Deutsche Post DHL Group uses green alternatives to conventional fuels in various operations. Within the framework of its membership of aireg e.V. and the Global Alliance Powerfuels, the company is pressing ahead with the development of sustainable fuels such as bio-fuel or e-fuel. For road freight, electric delivery vehicles already account for a significant proportion of the company's fleet.
