Interdisciplinary Master's Programm „Research on Learning and Instruction” in Germany welcomes international students
The Master’s program “Research on Learning and Instruction: An Interdisciplinary Program” which has been designed at the University of Augsburg for graduates of teacher education or bachelor’s programs with a close relation to empirical research on learning and instruction, offers students profound knowledge and skills related to research on learning and instruction. The Program ist completely taught in English.
Educators and teachers in K-12 education, universities, and beyond are increasingly expected to identify, assess, and analyze educational problems and to solve them in competent, evidence-based, and ethical ways. To be able to achieve this, they require current and well-grounded knowledge about the conditions and effects of processes of learning and instruction.
In the Master’s program “Research on Learning and Instruction: An Interdisciplinary Program” at the University of Augsburg, students acquire profound knowledge and skills related to research on learning and instruction. Through this—and under the guidance of highly qualified instructors—they produce knowledge that is urgently needed in educational practice.
The Master’s program prepares students both for careers in empirical educational research (e.g., within PhD programs) and for leading positions in educational practice. It has been designed for graduates of teacher education or bachelor’s programs with a close relation to empirical research on learning and instruction (e.g., educational science, psychology, communication science, etc.)
Main features of the program
The Master's program has an interdisciplinary focus, relies heavily on internationalization and intensive guidance for students and is designed with innovative course formats. The teaching concept strongly mirrors the process of empirical research. Students not only discuss, but also produce empirical evidence on the conditions, processes, and effects of learning and instruction.
During the first semester, the program helps students build the necessary theoretical and methodological foundations. In the second and third semester, students run two empirical research projects, under close instructor guidance. Students can choose from the following areas of research:
- Cognitive and instructional processes of learning and instruction: How do students process information while learning? How can we design environments to support information processing and learning?
- Motivational and emotional processes of learning and instruction: What are the effects of motivation and emotion on learning, and how can they be fostered?
- Learning and teaching with media: How can teaching and learning be improved by aid of media? How should media be designed in this respect?
- Teacher professionalism and heterogeneity: What characterizes professional reasoning and behavior of teachers? How can they use the heterogeneity of their students productively?
- Technology-Supported Assessment and Facilitation of Learning and Teaching: How can digital technology be used to measure learning processes? How can learning analytics and educational data mining be used to support learning?
What do current and former students think about the program?
Nomin Jargalsaikhan, a third semester students explains: “As I near the end of my program, I can confidently say that this program has equipped me with a solid foundation in both theoretical knowledge and research skills, while also building my confidence and work ethics for a smooth transition into my future career. I have gained lots of experiences and valuable personal and professional insights, and have always felt supported throughout the process.”Cara Enste, another third semester student, says: “I chose to study in Augsburg because the university offers a unique and comparatively small master's program with a strong emphasis on individualized attention and tailored support for students. Additionally, Augsburg is a beautiful city in Bavaria, providing an inspiring environment for studying and living. I can highly recommend studying this program at the University of Augsburg - it will be a great time!”
Finally, Alexander Till, a first semester student, holds the following opinion: “This study program provides enough basic information in the first semester for a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds to be able to engage in the learning sciences. For those already familiar with many of the concepts due to their prior study program there is enough room to delve into specific topics and deepen their understanding.”
