AVM at CeBIT: BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL
Three in One: ADSL, ISDN and Bluetooth Now Combined
New AVM Access Point BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL

Berlin/Hanover (ots)

AVM's new BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL is the
first to combine the ADSL, ISDN and Bluetooth technologies in a
single product. The Bluetooth access point contains both a complete
ADSL adapter and an ISDN-Controller, and connects directly to the
ADSL/ISDN line. This means that all communication services are
available to wireless clients. Moreover, the new BlueFRITZ! access
point provides a USB port for a direct PC connection, as well as
extension lines for two analog devices, such as phones or fax
machines. BlueFRITZ! also provides the networking profile PAN, to
network up to seven PCs without cables-at a range of 100 meters. All
the connected PCs can access ADSL and ISDN. BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL can
be seen in action for the first time at CeBIT.
ADSL Over Bluetooth Wireless
ADSL over Bluetooth combines wireless convenience with the speed
of ADSL Internet access. With wireless range of 100 meters,
integrated data encryption with 128-bit key length, and throughput
rates of 723 kbit/s, Bluetooth offers ideal conditions for fast
surfing pleasure over 768 kbit/s ADSL lines. In the Bluetooth
network, ADSL data is transported using the PAN networking profile.
This permits the use of IPComp data compression, which increases the
Bluetooth data rate to more than one megabit per second. In
comparison with other wireless technologies, Bluetooth offers
significantly lower hardware costs, lower power consumption, more
robust operation and simpler handling. The perfect complement to the
new BlueFRITZ! access point is BlueFRITZ! USB, one of the world's
smallest Bluetooth clients. Weighing under 1/2 ounce, the thumb-sized
BlueFRITZ! USB is designed for ADSL and ISDN communication, as well
as for wireless networking and other Bluetooth applications.
Full ISDN Features Over Bluetooth-Extensions for Phone and Fax
BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL also permits wireless ISDN
communication-independently from ADSL access-using the Bluetooth ISDN
profile CIP. The CIP profile provides all ISDN features and services
over Bluetooth, including one and two-channel Internet access with
data compression, color fax communication, two-channel H.320 video
telephony and fixed-line SMS messaging. All D and B-channel protocols
are supported. Users of the FRITZ! software, for example, can
continue using its familiar answering machine, PC faxing, and
fixed-line SMS messaging capabilities. The extension lines
incorporated in the access point can be used to connect analog
terminal equipment, such as telephones and fax machines, to the ISDN
line. Thus BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL provides all kinds of communications
in a single device.
Personal-Area Networking Profile (PAN) Connects PCs over Bluetooth
AVM's BlueFRITZ! also provides full TCP/IP networking among PCs
using the Bluetooth PAN profile. TCP/IP is the standard data
communication protocol in the Internet and in almost all network
operating systems, including Windows. Support for TCP/IP thus paves
the way for a wide range of applications. Up to seven PCs can form a
LAN using the Bluetooth PAN profile. An additional PC can be
connected directly to the access point's USB port and join the
wireless network. All PCs in the network also have access to
resources such as scanners and printers. BlueFRITZ! uses efficient
Bluetooth Class 1 radio transceivers, attaining line-of-sight range
of at least 100 meters.
Countless Wireless Applications with Bluetooth
The Bluetooth profiles supported by AVM's BlueFRITZ! products open
the door to a multitude of wireless applications. The ISDN profile
CIP provides full access to the ISDN line, while the networking
profile PAN connects several Bluetooth devices. Moreover, PAN also
provides a wireless connection to the ADSL line. When sharing the
ADSL line, all PCs can use the same Internet access account, or a
separate account can be assigned to each user. Users can thus
continue with their familiar access software, such as T-Online, AOL
or 1&1. Bluetooth devices which do not yet support the PAN profile,
such as some PDAs and palmtops, can use the modem-based profile DUN
to surf the web at ADSL speed.
Five-Year Guarantee on BlueFRITZ! AP-X DSL
A five-year guarantee and AVM's customary free support round out
the product. AVM provides a special service area for all products in
the BlueFRITZ! family at www.avm.de/bluefritz/service. There users
can find current information including drivers, updates, practical
tips and application examples.
