Bonn, 23. September 2022: DHL Global Forwarding, der führende internationale Anbieter von Luft-, See- und Straßentransportleistungen, hat ein neues Umschlagzentrum und eine neue Zentrale in Johannesburg, Südafrika, eingeweiht. Der nachhaltige, hauptsächlich mit Solarenergie betriebene Komplex wurde am Donnerstag, den 22. September 2022 offiziell eröffnet. Die Anlage im Sky Park Industrial Estate liegt in unmittelbarer Nähe zum internationalen Flughafen O. R. Tambo. Der neue Hub verfügt über temperaturkontrollierte Räume, und die Mitarbeitenden sind in Good Distribution Practices (GDP) geschult, um bestmöglich die Bedürfnisse des sich schnell entwickelnden afrikanischen Life Sciences and Healthcare (LSH)-Sektors zu erfüllen. Mit der Eröffnung der Anlage erweitert DHL Global Forwarding sein umfangreiches Logistiknetz, stärkt seine Position auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent und in Südafrika und kann die Anforderungen seiner Kunden noch effizienter erfüllen.
Amadou Diallo, CEO von DHL Global Forwarding Middle East & Africa, sagte: „Wir sind stolz darauf, dass diese neue Anlage nach den höchsten Nachhaltigkeits- und Energieeffizienzstandards gebaut wurde. Dies steht im Einklang mit dem Ziel von DHL, alle logistikbezogenen Emissionen bis zum Jahr 2050 auf netto-null zu reduzieren. Unsere Klimaschutzinitiativen und Programme zur Reduzierung der CO2-Emissionen haben sich bereits positiv auf die logistischen Lieferketten weltweit ausgewirkt, und der Bau einer nachhaltigen Infrastruktur wie diese solarbetriebene Anlage bringt uns unserem Ziel ein Stück näher.“
Das neue Terminal im Wert von sieben Millionen Euro umfasst hochmoderen Büros und ein 10.000 Quadratmeter großes Lager. Es wird als Drehscheibe für Transport-, Logistik- und Lagerlösungen dienen und verschiedenen Branchen internationale Frachtkompetenz bereitstellen. Ein starker Fokus liegt dabei auf dem afrikanischen Life Sciences and Healthcare (LSH)-Sektor, der mit einer erwarteten jährlichen Wachstumsrate von 6,3 Prozent und einem voraussichtlichen Umsatz von 7,1 Milliarden Euro bis 2023 zu den boomenden Branchen des Landes gehört. Um den spezifischen Anforderungen der LSH-Branche gerecht zu werden, verfügt die Anlage nicht nur über temperaturkontrollierte Räume, sondern ist auch GDP-konform und erfüllt die DHL Global GxP Pharma-Standards sowie die höchsten Sicherheitsstandards der Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA A). Am Standort erbringen die in Good Distribution Practices (GDP) geschulten Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern Services wie den Umschlag spezieller temperaturkontrollierter Fracht für ein- und ausgehende Transporte vom internationalen Flughafen O. R. Tambo.
Bei der Eröffnungsfeier sagte Clement Blanc, CEO von DHL Global Forwarding für Südafrika (SA) & Subsahara-Afrika (SSA): „Die neue Anlage in Johannesburg ist der nächste logische Schritt im Rahmen unseren Bemühungen, das Wirtschaftswachstum zu unterstützen und die Transformation der Lieferketten in Südafrika zu beschleunigen. Diese Anlage erweitert die globalen Verbindungen nach Afrika und gewährleistet, dass Sektoren wie LSH reibungslos arbeiten, auf ein effizientes und zuverlässiges Logistiknetz zugreifen und weiter wachsen können.
Blanc weiter: „Der strategische Standort unserer neuen Anlage am Flughafen O. R. Tambo wird es uns ermöglichen, unser Angebot für unsere Kunden zu verbessern. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir sowohl zeit- als auch temperaturempfindliche pharmazeutische Güter und Medizinprodukte transportieren können. Ich vertraue auf unsere Fähigkeit, unsere Kunden bei der Entwicklung und Expansion ihres Geschäfts zu unterstützen und weiterhin das sozioökonomische Wachstum von Südafrika und der gesamten Region Subsahara-Afrika zu fördern.“
Die neue Anlage wird auch qualifizierte Arbeitsplätze in Johannesburg schaffen. DHL Global Forwarding hat seine Gesamtbelegschaft in Südafrika seit 2021 bereits um elf Prozent vergrößert. Das Unternehmen setzt sich auch nachdrücklich dafür ein, die Wirtschaftsbeteiligung von KMUs zu unterstützen und voranzutreiben sowie sicherzustellen, dass sie Zugang zu globalen Lieferketten haben.

- The new 10,000 m2 airport hub is ready to support Africa’s growing life sciences and healthcare (LSH) industry with safe, reliable and efficient consolidation and transport solutions
- Both warehouse and head office meet highest sustainability standards and will be almost entirely powered by green electricity from photovoltaic panels
Johannesburg, September 23, 2022: DHL Global Forwarding, the leading international air, ocean, and road freight services provider, has inaugurated a new transhipment hub and head office in Johannesburg, South Africa. The sustainable, primarily solar-powered complex was officially opened on Thursday, 22 September 2022. Located in the Sky Park Industrial Estate it provides easy access to “OR Tambo International Airport”. The facility’s temperature-controlled chambers and Good Distribution Practices (GDP)-trained personnel enable the new hub to cater to the unique needs of Africa’s rapidly advancing life sciences and healthcare (LSH) sector. The facility’s opening marks a significant addition to DHL Global Forwarding’s extensive logistics network, further strengthening its positioning on the African continent and in South Africa while enabling the group to handle its customers’ requirements more efficiently.
Amadou Diallo, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Middle East & Africa, said: “We are proud that this new facility was built to the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency in line with DHL Global Forwarding’s goal of reaching net-zero logistics-related emissions by 2050. Already, our climate protection initiatives and CO2 emissions reduction programs have had a positive impact on logistics supply chains globally and building sustainable infrastructure like this solar-powered facility takes us closer to our goal.”
The new EUR 7-million facility (R127 million) includes offices and a 10,000 m2 warehouse. It will serve as a hub for transport, logistics, and warehouse solutions, as well as international freight expertise for different industries. This includes a strong focus on Africa’s life sciences and healthcare (LSH) sector, which with an expected annual growth rate of 6.3% and anticipated revenue of EUR 7.1 billion by 2023, is one of the booming industries in the country. To serve the needs of the LSH sector, the site has been designed to meet the DHL Global GxP Pharma standards and the highest Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA A) security standards.
At the facility’s opening ceremony, Clement Blanc, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding for South Africa (SA) & Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) said: “A new facility in Johannesburg is a natural next step in our efforts to support economic growth and accelerate the pace of supply chain transformation undergoing in South Africa. This facility expands global connections to Africa, ensuring that sectors like LSH can operate smoothly, access an efficient and reliable logistics network, and continue to grow.
Blanc continued: “The strategic location of our new facility at ‘OR Tambo’ will enable us to enhance our service offering to clients. We are excited to be able to transport both time- and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical goods and health products, among other services. I am confident in our ability to assist our customers in developing and expanding their businesses and continuing to aid the socio-economic growth of South Africa and the greater Sub-Saharan African region.”
The new facility will also create skilled jobs in Johannesburg. DHL Global Forwarding has expanded its total workforce in South Africa by 11% since 2021. The company also has a strong commitment to supporting and driving the participation of SMEs in the economy and ensuring that they have a place in global supply chains.

At the same time as the warehouse opening, DHL saw the inaugural class of 17 students graduate from its Sustainability Leadership Mindset Development (SALAM) program. The program was launched as a part of DHL’s social impact initiatives that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). To date, the SALAM program has successfully implemented community outreach projects in Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
