Bonn/Deutschland, Boston/USA, 19. Oktober 2023: DHL Express und World Energy, ein führender SAF-Hersteller und Anbieter kohlenstoffarmer Lösungen, haben eine langfristige strategische Vereinbarung unterzeichnet, um die Dekarbonisierung der Luftfahrtlogistik durch den Kauf von ca. 668 Millionen Litern nachhaltigem Flugkraftstoff über Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificates (SAFc) zu beschleunigen. Der Vertrag mit einer Laufzeit von sieben Jahren bis 2030 ist eine der längsten und umfangreichsten SAFc-Vereinbarungen in der Luftfahrtbranche.
Es wird erwartet, dass durch die Vereinbarung rund 1,7 Millionen Tonnen Kohlendioxid-Emissionen über den Lebenszyklus des Flugkraftstoffs reduziert werden – dies entspricht der klimaneutralen Abwicklung der rund 77.000 jährlichen Flugbewegungen von DHL Express in Nord- und Südamerika für ein ganzes Jahr. Dieser Meilenstein ist ein weiterer Beleg für die ehrgeizige Nachhaltigkeits-Roadmap von DHL Group, die das Ziel beinhaltet, die jährlichen Scope 1, 2 und 3-Treibhausgasemissionen des Konzerns bis 2030 auf unter 29 Millionen Tonnen CO2e zu senken.

Wir wollen mehr Lieferanten dazu inspirieren, die branchenweite Produktion und Einführung von SAF zu beschleunigen.“

Transparenz und Rechenschaftspflicht mit Book & Claim
Bei SAFc werden die Umwelteigenschaften des Kraftstoffs mit Hilfe eines sog. „Book & Claim-Chain-of-Custody-Modells“ vom Kraftstoff selbst getrennt. Der „Book & Claim“-Ansatz erhöht die Transparenz und Nachvollziehbarkeit nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe, indem er sicherstellt, dass die mit jeder Gutschrift verbundenen Emissionsreduzierungen genau übertragen und von einer dritten Partei überprüft werden. Es ermöglicht DHL Express, SAFc zu kaufen, die damit verbundenen Emissionsreduzierungen zu nutzen und die Umwelteigenschaften über den GoGreen Plus Service an seine Kunden weiterzugeben. SAFc, das über Book & Claim geliefert wird, trägt außerdem dazu bei, sowohl die logistischen Kosten als auch die Emissionen zu minimieren, da der Kraftstoff nicht um die ganze Welt transportiert werden muss. Damit ist SAFc der effizienteste Weg zur Dekarbonisierung der Luftfahrt. Das gesamte World Energy SAFc für DHL erfüllt die strengen Nachhaltigkeitszertifizierungsstandards des Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). Darüber hinaus werden alle Mengen über ein unabhängiges Register zurückverfolgt, um die Nachvollziehbarkeit der SAFc-Angaben zu gewährleisten. Der Kraftstoff selbst wird an Flughäfen im Großraum Los Angeles geliefert, die in der Nähe der Produktionsstätte von World Energy in Paramount, Kalifornien, liegen.

DHL Express and World Energy agree to global partnership to speed up aviation decarbonization via Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificates
- Seven-year agreement will provide 668 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to replace fossil jet fuel
- Will enable DHL to reduce approx. 1.7 million tonnes of CO2e on a lifecycle basis, equivalent to operating DHL’s Americas aviation network carbon neutrally for one year
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates (SAFc) will play a pivotal role in DHL’s journey to achieve ambitious emissions targets
Bonn/Germany, Boston/USA, October 19, 2023: DHL Express and World Energy, a leading SAF producer and low-carbon solutions provider, have signed a long-term strategic agreement to accelerate the decarbonization of aviation logistics through the purchase of approx. 668 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel via sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc). The seven-year contract, to run through 2030, is one of the longest and largest SAFc agreements in the aviation industry to date.
The agreement is expected to reduce approx. 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the aviation fuel lifecycle – this is equivalent to handling the approximately 77,000 annual aircraft movements of DHL Express in the Americas carbon neutrally for a full year. The milestone agreement is further testament to DHL Group’s ambitious Sustainability Roadmap, which includes the goal to reduce the Group's annual greenhouse gas emissions to below 29 million tonnes CO2e in 2030 across scopes 1, 2 and 3.

Transparency and accountability with Book & Claim
With SAFc, the fuel’s environmental attributes are separated from the fuel itself using a “Book & Claim” chain of custody model. The Book &Claim approach enhances transparency and accountability of sustainable fuels by ensuring that the emission reductions associated with each credit are accurately transferred and verified by a third party. It allows DHL Express to purchase SAFc, utilize the associated emission reductions, and extend the environmental attributes to its customers through the GoGreen Plus service. SAFc delivered through Book & Claim also helps to minimize both logistical costs and emissions as the fuel does not need to be shipped around the world. This helps make SAFc the most efficient way to decarbonize aviation. All of World Energy SAFc for DHL will meet rigorous sustainability certification standards from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). In addition, all volumes will be traced through an independent registry to ensure traceability of claims related to SAFc. The fuel itself will be supplied to Los Angeles area airports, close to World Energy’s production facility in Paramount, CA.
