Costa Rica

Graz/Vienna, 22 February 2008. Andritz VA TECH HYDRO, a member of international technology group Andritz, received an order with a value of approximately 65 million Euros for the supply of electromechanical equipment as well as steel linings and penstocks for the Pirris hydropower plant from Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), Costa Rica.
The contractual scope consists of design, delivery, erection supervision and commissioning of the complete electromechanical equipment including two Pelton turbines, valves and generators with a power plant output of approx. 140 MW, as well as design, manufacturing and installation of tunnel steel linings and penstocks with approx. 3,300 tons of steel plates.
The project is mostly financed by Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC). ICE is the national electricity company in Costa Rica and generates about three quarters of its electricity from hydropower. Pirris will contribute to the stability of the grid and enable Costa Rica to meet its future electricity demand.
This order confirms the excellent long-time cooperation between Andritz VA TECH HYDRO and ICE as well as Andritz VA TECH HYDRO´s good market position in the field of new plants and refurbishments of existing hydropower plants in Central and South America.
