Berlin (ots)
Anas Alkharboutli, who works in Syria for the German Press Agency dpa, was awarded an Award of Excellence at the Pictures of the Year International competition in the Daily Life category. His photograph shows residents of a destroyed neighbourhood in the Syrian city of Al Atarib sharing an Iftar meal to break their fast during the month of Ramadan. Alkharboutli took the photograph on May 7, 2020, after the area was destroyed during military operations in the region of Aleppo.
"The works of Anas Alkharboutli depict life in the middle of rubble and suffering. As a photographer he has a special connection to the people. His images from Syria transmit hope and inspire confidence in extreme conditions of life," says Silke Brüggemeier, deputy editor-in-chief of dpa and head of picture services Germany. "We are happy for Anas Alkharboutli and proud that he is part of our team. We thank him very much for his exceptional work," Silke Brüggemeier says.
Anas Alkharboutli, born in 1992, studied engineering at the University of Damascus. He began his career as a photojournalist in 2015 and soon became known for his sensitive images and videos of the Syrian civil war.
He already received a Pictures of the Year prize for his work last year, also an Award of Excellence in the category Daily Life. In October 2020, Anas Alkharboutli also won the Young Reporter Trophy (Photo) at the 27th edition of the Prix Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents and received an honourable mention at the UNICEF Photo of the Year award in 2020.
