Beautiful Birds to fly to Germany for Volkswagen Challenge Trophy
Moroka Swallows, together with their official title sponsor, Volkswagen South Africa, are delighted to announce that the club's Premier Soccer League squad will be visiting Germany from the 16th of July to the 22nd of July 2007. During this time, the team is to participate in the first International Volkswagen Challenge Trophy against Bundesliga team, VFL Wolfsburg. With all eyes on South Africa in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, plans are already in progress for Moroka Swallows to host VFL Wolfsburg in South Africa in 2008.
The team will be staying and training at the Sporthotel Fuchsbachtal situated in Barsinghausen, which accommodated the Polish National team during the recent 2006 World Cup in Germany. Facilities include full indoor soccer centre, medical centre, Astroturf pitches, 3000-seater stadium and outdoor training pitches. The team will also have the opportunity to visit the world famous AutoStadt at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, which documents the history of the Volkswagen Group.
Commenting on the forthcoming tour, the newly appointed Moroka Swallow's coach, Ian Gorowa said, "This exercise will give us an opportunity to assess ourselves technically and tactically, considering the fact that we will be playing against two top European teams. A first-class pre season tour lays a strong foundation for the upcoming season and gives us a chance to examine a few combinations. The trip will serve as a team building exercise and bonding experience".
Gorowa further stated, "It will be good for team spirit as it will help the young and new players to familiarise themselves with their team mates. The entire technical team is looking forward to the tour as they will interact with their German counterparts to share knowledge and ideas".
The club will conclude its pre-season preparations with a final game against Scottish Premiership team, Heart of Midtlothian FC, from Edinburgh. Heart of Midlothian FC will be on tour in Germany for their pre season training and will not take the encounter against Moroka Swallows lightly as they are scheduled to face Barcelona shortly afterwards.
The CEO of Moroka Swallows, Leon Prins, is excited about the upcoming trip, "This is a fantastic opportunity for the club and its players to visit Europe to participate in an International match against a top flight Bundesliga team like VFL Wolfsburg. We will be taking this opportunity to ensure that we are properly prepared for the 2007 / 2008 season and you can expect to see some exciting youngsters from our development teams coming along for experience. I would like to thank Volkswagen South Africa for this exciting first and we look forward to making our sponsor and South Africa proud'.
